The comet was seen from 17h00m UT when it escaped a cloud layer and until it set 11 minutes later. It was a considerably more challenging object than previous evening, but still clearly visible in binoculars. The formal observation was made shortly before setting when both the comet and the comparison star Alpha Aqr [true alt. 4.1 deg] were visible. The comet appeared 0.6 mag. brighter than this star and its magnitude was corrected by -0.9 mag. for extinction by using an empirically determined extinction coefficient of 0.21 mag. per airmass. Despite these corrections the final magnitude should be fairly precise and correct to within +/- 0.3 mag. The limiting magnitude near comet was approx. +3.5 with 12x50B, hence NEL = -1.0 [approx.].) 2003 2 14.715 wI 1.3:TK 5.0B 7 & 3 8 0.8 15 SKI Hønefoss (The comet and its tail was seen for six minutes by my wife and myself until it set at 17h14m UT. It was easily visible and a more prominent object than C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) during my final pre-perihelion observation on 1996 Apr. 27.86 UT, that was obtained under a similar geometry with the same instrument and from nearly the same location. An apparently stellar nucleus appeared yellowish (similar to Capella) and was surrounded by a small diffuse coma. The formal observation was made at true altitude 2.8 deg. when the Sun was 8.2 deg below the horizon [17h10m]. A further check of the brightness using a 5-cm diafragma on the comet - giving an attenuation of 1.0 magnitude - with the full aperture view of Alfa Aqr confirmed that the comet was slightly brighter than magnitude 2.) 2003 2 13.73 B 2.0 TK 5.0B 7 2 8 0.9 23 GRA Tryvann, Oslo (Despite nautical twilight and true altitude of 3 degrees the comet and its tail was a very neat object and easily seen with 7x50B. It was just not visible to the naked eye, indicating NEL=1.8 near comet. With 7.0-cmR at 24x: The coma appeared yellowish and showed an intense and apparently stellar central condensation of mag. 2.8 [TK]; the western part of the tail was bright, curved and with a sharply defined boundary; several streamers were suspected within the tail. Magnitude not corrected for extinction as the comparison star Alpha Aqr was located at nearly the same altitude as the comet. Observed under a clear and transparent sky from an elevation of 529 meters, but barely escaping a layer of clouds/fog. The comet remained visible until a true altitude of -0.3 degrees!
